What You Need

Just four simple ingredients - and some extra coconut or colourful sprinkles to roll them in!

  • Weet-Bix - a box of Weet-Bix is such a staple in most pantries! Or you could substitute with Vita-Brits or Weeties. An excellent source of wholegrains, Weet-Bix are high in fibre and low in sugar. Healthy tick!
  • Milo - is a malted milk powder similar to Ovaltine or Horlicks. Again, that green tin of Milo is a pantry staple in most households here in Australia. Whilst Milo has some additives, including sweeteners, the ingredient list is fairly simple and contains added vitamins and minerals, calcium and iron.
  • Sweetened condensed milk - easily purchased at the supermarket. You could use the 'skim' version if you prefer.
  • Desiccated coconut - this is unsweetened, finely grated and dried flesh from the white part of the coconut. Store your coconut in an airtight container in a cool, dry and dark place to keep it at its freshest.
  • Extra desiccated coconut and/or sprinkles (100's and 1000's) - for coating the Milo Balls in.

Equipment Required

Just a food processor (or a rolling pin) and a couple of bowls are the only kitchen items required to whip up a batch of these sweet and simple Weet-Bix Balls.

Of course, if you have a Thermomix, you can use that too!

Step By Step Instructions

A batch of these Weet-Bix Milo Balls are the easiest little bites to make! Just crush, mix and roll.... and they're ready to eat!

Step 1 - Crush The Weetbix

Using a food processor or Thermomix (or rolling pin), crush the Weet-Bix until they resemble fine crumbs. Place them in a large bowl that will hold all the ingredients.

If using a Thermomix: Place the Weet-Bix into the Thermomix bowl and crush for 10 seconds on Speed 8.

Step 2 - Mix All Ingredients

Add the Milo, sweetened condensed milk and desiccated coconut and mix all together until well combined.

If using a Thermomix: Add the Milo, coconut and condensed milk and mix for 10 seconds on Speed 4. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix for a further 5 seconds.

Step 3 - Roll To Decorate

Use your hands to roll the mixture into heaped teaspoon-sized balls (although you can make them as big or small as you like).

Toss the balls in sprinkles or coconut until they are well coated. And that's it!

Expert Tips

  • If you have a Thermomix or a food processor, this will make it super quick to crush the biscuits, but if not, then a rolling pin will do.
  • This mixture will make approximately 30 balls (depending on the size). I like to use heaped teaspoonfuls for a nice sized snack.
  • Milo Weet-Bix Balls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperarure for up to one week - that's if they don't get eaten first!
  • You can freeze Weet-Bix balls in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Perfect for a 'grab and go' snack that will be thawed by recess time.

Why are Weet-Bix healthy?

Weet-Bix are a healthy choice and an excellent source of wholegrains. They're high in fibre and low in sugar, PLUS, they have addedB vitamins, including B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), and B9 (folate), magnesium and iron.

What is Milo, and is it good for you?

That familiar green tin that lurks in most Australian pantries has been around since 1934 (!!!) when it was developed as a cheap way to give children added vitamins and minerals. Read about the history of Milo here.
Basically, it's a crunchy chocolate flavoured malted milk powder that kids love, similar to Ovaltine or Horlicks, and is made with malted barley, dried milk, cocoa and sugar. Milo also contains 9 essential vitamins and minerals - Vitamins B (2, 3, 6 & 12), Vitamins C & D, calcium, iron and phosphorus - so it gets my tick!

Is there a substitute for Milo in this recipe?

You could substitute the Milo with Ovaltine, or either cocoa powder or cacao powder, depending on your preference.

Ingredients

  • 10 Weet-Bix
  • 25 g (¼ cup) Milo (malted milk powder) or cocoa powder
  • 100 g (1 cup) desiccated coconut
  • 395 g sweetened condensed milk
  • extra coconut and sprinkles (100s and 1000s), for rolling

Instructions

  • Place the Weet-Bix into a food processor and process until they resemble fine crumbs (you could also use a rolling pin instead).

    If using a Thermomix: Place the Weet-Bix into the Thermomix bowl and crush for 10 seconds on Speed 8.

  • Place the crushed Weet-Bix into a large bowl and add the Milo, coconut and condensed milk and mix together.

    If using a Thermomix: Add the Milo, coconut and condensed milk and mix for 10 seconds on Speed 4. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix for a further 5 seconds.

  • Roll heaped teaspoons of the mixture into balls.

  • Roll in the extra coconut to coat.Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
