Fried wonton is also one of the most popular Chinese restaurant appetizers, loved by many people across the world. You will need 3 basic key ingredients, wonton wrappers, minced meat, and simple seasoning ingredients.

You can deep fry these wontons or you can steam, boil, or add in soups and noodles. Here is more of our Wonton Soup, and Wonton in Chilli Oil Recipes you can try out!

Ingredients

  • Wonton wrappers: Are made from wheat flour, egg, and water and are ideal for making wonton recipes. It has a delicate thin texture and comes in yellow colour square sheets. You can buy it at Chinese grocery stores or Oriental Asian supermarkets.
  • Ground meat: I used ground chicken in this recipe. Add your choice of minced meat, such as chicken, turkey, pork, lamb, prawns/shrimp, etc. You can also add a combination of minced meat and minced seafood. Ground pork and shrimp is a popular wonton filling option.
  • Vegetables: Spring onions, freshly grated garlic and ginger and essential filling ingredients. Grated carrots and cabbage can be also added.
  • Seasonings: Simply season the fillings with soy sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper.
  • Cornstarch: you can either add cornstarch or potato starch to the fillings. It helps to bind the ingredients and creates a thick sticky texture.
  • Cooking oil: as this is a deep frying recipe, you will need a good quailty high smoke point oils like sunflower, peanut, avocado, vegetable oil, etc.

How To Make Chilli Dipping Sauce

To make the homemade soy-based chilli dipping sauce, combine light soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and chilli oil. Mix everything well until sugar dissolved.

Instead of this sauce, you can also serve fried wontons with sweet and sour sauce, sweet chilli sauce, soy-base dipping sauce, chilli garlic sauce, Sriracha hot chilli sauce, etc. Dipping sauce enhance the flavour of fried wonton and brings extra savoury umami taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best oil to use for frying wontons?

High smoke point oils, such as peanut, vegetable, sunflower, avocado oil are best for frying wontons. These oils are neutral in taste and can hold the high heat that is required for deep frying.

Can you fry wontons in a frying pan?

Deep frying is the best and traditional way for frying wonton but if you want to use less oil, you can also fry them in a frying pan. Fill the frying pan with cooking oil at least one inch and fry with medium heat. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until crispy golden brown, then flip and fry the other side.

How do you keep fried wontons crispy?

To keep fried wontons crispy, fry with small batches and do not overcrowd the pan to maintain the oil temperature. Once the wontons are fried, place them over the wire rack to drain off excess oil. Make sure not to stack the wontons to prevent moisture buildup and serve immediately after cooked.

Freezing Tips

  • You can make the wontons ahead and store it for future use. To freeze them, place the folded wontons over the baking sheet ( parchment paper ) and make sure they are not sticking each other.
  • Then place the tray in the freezer and freeze for 1-2 hours. Once the wontons are set and firm. Transfer them to the freezer-safe containers or bags.
  • Properly sealed and stored wontons usually last in the freezer for up to 3 months. Do not need to defrost the frozen wontons. Fry them directly in the pre-heated oil and you might need to fry a few extra minutes to ensure the fillings are fully cooked.

Turned out very well. Used msg instead of salt, and used a full pound of meat so I doubled the seasonings. Did 1 test wonton and then adjusted spices from there. Might try adding some kind of chili pepper or maybe chili seeds to give it some heat.
