Cream Cheese Frosting

Love cream cheese frosting, but are not crazy about the amount of sugar that’s found in most recipes? Then you’ll definitely want to save this recipe for future reference.

This healthy cream cheese frosting is naturally sweetened (no butter or powdered sugar necessary!). Plus, it takes just 4 simple ingredients and whips right up in 5 minutes!

Reasons to Love this Cream Cheese Icing

  • Smooth, creamy, and satisfying
  • Easy to make – comes together in 5 minutes
  • Naturally sweetened
  • 4 simple ingredients
  • Great for kids’ treats
  • Freezes well

Ingredients

  • Cream Cheese: you will need a block of plain cream cheese for this recipe. I do not recommend using light, fat-free, or whipped cream cheese as the results will vary.
  • Greek Yogurt: plain whole milk Greek or regular-style yogurt is the key to making this frosting nice and soft.
  • Sweetener: you can use maple syrup, honey (for kids over 1 year of age), or agave nectar in this recipe.
  • Vanilla Extract: brings all the flavors together in this frosting

Storage

Store cream cheese frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Bring it to room temperature and give it a little re-whip before using. This cream cheese frosting can also be frozen for up to 3 months in an airtight container. When you’re ready to use, place it in the fridge to thaw overnight.

How to Soften Cream Cheese

Make sure to soften your cream cheese to room temperature before you start making the frosting. You can leave the cream cheese on your kitchen counter for about an hour. Or you can soften the cream cheese, unwrapped, on a microwave-safe plate for about 15-30 seconds.

This had a strong sour flavor that my normally not picky 4 yo soundly rejected and spit out. I thought it was edible, but not good. We used maple syrup, maybe another sweetener would have worked better.

    • Michele OlivierReply

Hi Jaqueline! I make this almost weekly and have never had a sour frosting result. Try using a bit more maple syrup until you achieve your desired sweetness. The store-bought frostings are so overly sweet. I hope this helps and you enjoy this lighter frosting option!

  2. Lynda KelloggReply

This frosting was so good I was eating it with a spoon! Not that sickening sweet like most.

    • Michele OlivierReply

That’s why we love it too! Thanks for sharing, Lynda! xo, Michele

  3. DebReply

Could I add banana or raisins for sweet instead of maple syrup? Would that still keep a good consistency?

    • Michele OlivierReply

Hi Deb! I wouldn’t recommend using raisins. You can try banana but it will not be as sweet as maple syrup. You can substitute with agave or honey, too! xo, Michele

      • DebReply

I decided to go with maple syrup. Did half of what the recipe asks for, and my baby loved it! I really enjoyed it too. I’ll definitely use this recipe again for her smash cake.

  4. JordanReply

Easy, yummy frosting! Perfect for a first birthday cake.

  5. MandiReply

I used this frosting for my son’s 1st birthday and it turned out great, and he LOVED it! I highly recommend!!

Hi Mandy! Thanks for sharing your results. Hope your son had an awesome birthday! 🎉 xo, Michele
