Ingredients

Crust

Almond Flour - Almond flour is a good alternative for a keto diet. It can be substituted one-to-one in most recipes, and I recommend using it to make keto shortbread cookies!

Coconut Flour - Coconut flour is a great way to enjoy delicious baked goods that are gluten free. I use it along with almond flour because the natural dryness of coconut flour balances the oiliness from the almonds. I like using coconut flour on its own for making muffins because they're very easy to make and taste amazing!

Salted Butter - I use salted butter in all my baking recipes. The hint of salt balances the sweetness nicely.

Water - You need a small amount of water for the crust to form a dough and hold together.

Filling

Pecans - Obviously these are the star of the show in a pecan pie. One of my favorite snacks is pecans. All I do is roast them until they begin to smell fragrant. They make a great garnish or an addition to salads and oatmeal too!

Sweetener - I use my blend of erythritol, xylitol, and stevia in my recipes. It tastes like sugar and is twice as sweet as other sweeteners so it's not as expensive to use. Making your own from generic brands of each ingredient also saves money. I do offer alternatives in the recipe card.

Salted Butter - Again, the salt in the butter balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.

Cream - Just a little bit of heavy cream in the filling makes it creamy and rich.

Large Eggs - Eggs are the binder in this and help hold the filling together.

Molasses - I use molasses for flavor, not sweetness. Since molasses has a strong flavor, you don't need a lot of it to make your recipe taste like brown sugar. This recipe uses two teaspoons of molasses which have five carbs each. So one entire pie has 10 grams of carbs from molasses. Divided into 8 or 12 pieces that is a minimal impact on total carbs.

Vanilla Extract - It's my go-to ingredient for baking. I love using vanilla extract in my baked goods. It adds such a rich flavor to items like cakes and brownies!

Chocolate Chips - You can use any sugar free chocolate chips you like. I used dark chocolate chips but semisweet or milk chocolate chips work too! This pie is mildly sweetened when using dark chocolate. It is nice since many pecan pies are almost cloyingly sweet. If you like a sweet sweet pecan pie increase the sweetener a bit and use milk chocolate chips.

How to Make Low Carb Pecan Pie

Our keto chocolate pecan pie is the perfect blend of sweet and gooey. It’s made with rich dark chocolate chips that melt in your mouth, while pecans give it an extra crunch. You can enjoy this guilt-free treat without feeling like you’re missing out on anything!

Step One: Combine the ingredients for the pie crust in the food processor and process on high for 2-3 minutes until they come together in a ball. If it seems crumbly you did not process it long enough.

Step Two: Press the crust into the bottom of a deep dish 9-inch pie plate. Prick with a fork and bake for 10 minutes.

Step Six: Bake the sugar free chocolate pecan pie on the center oven rack for 45-55 minutes until the filling barely jiggles. You may need to cover the top with foil for the last 15 minutes of cooking time.

Expert Tip: You do not need to bake this on a rimmed baking sheet as long as you use a deep dish pie pan.

Variations

You can make many different low carb chocolate pecan pie variations with just a few subs.

White Chocolate Chips - Sub in some white chocolate chips in place of the dark chocolate chips. White chocolate chips are actually made from cocoa butter, milk solids, and vanilla extract.

Walnuts - I usually like to add chopped walnuts to my brownies but they are also great in this pie instead of the pecans.

Pecan Pie Bars - You can bake this in a 9x13 pan for thin bars instead of slices of pie if you'd like.

Spiced Pecan Pie - Kick up the spices and add in some pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice, or you own combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, or cardamon.

Sea Salt - After cooling sprinkle some coarse sea salt over the top of the pie.

Garnish - You can garnish the cooled pie with melted chocolate or chocolate shavings. It is also delicious served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Common Questions

Is Pecan Pie Keto?

Nope. Chocolate pecan pie is a delicious, sweet treat but with so many sugar and carbs in traditional recipes it’s hard to enjoy on a keto diet. I wanted a solution to have this treat without feeling guilty or gaining weight which is why I developed this keto chocolate pecan pie recipe.

Why is pecan pie bad?

Classic pecan pie is mostly Karo corn syrup. Healthier versions of pecan pie, such as this one, are not bad.

Why is my pecan pie runny in the middle?

If your low carb chocolate pecan pie is not set in the middle you didn't cook it long enough. Don't worry, it is still delicious!

Should chocolate pecan pie be refrigerated?

Yes, I do refrigerate this pie. It is best to store it in the refrigerator once it cools it so it finishes setting and the crust firms up. Then if you like it warm when you serve it just heat individual pieces in the microwave.

Can I freeze chocolate pecan pie?

Yes, you can also freeze this low carb chocolate pecan pie. Just thaw overnight in the fridge and serve like usual.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate very well with butter or shortening.

  • Put the almond flour, coconut flour, and butter in a food processor and pulse until crumbs form. Add the water and pulse until it comes together in a dough. Press into the bottom and halfway up the sides of the prepared pie plate. Prick the bottoms with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes.

  • Meanwhile, in a medium bowl combine the butter and sweetener. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the vanilla, molasses, heavy cream, and egg. Beat until combined.

  • Stir in the chopped pecans and chocolate chips. (Optional: set some aside to make a design on the top). Pour over the baked crust. The filling will be thick. Bake for 40-45 minutes until no longer jiggly and golden brown.

  • Cool completely. I prefer to make this a couple of days ahead of time. The flavor improves after being in the fridge for a bit and chilling helps the crust hold together.

Notes

Nutrition: This pie has 12 servings since it is so rich. There are 5.8 NET carbs per serving.

Molasses: One teaspoon of molasses has 5 carbs. This recipe has 12 servings so each piece has less than 1 carb from the molasses. It is used for flavor, not sweetness, in this recipe. But you can just leave it out if you prefer. Alternatively, you can sub in a brown sugar sweetener such as Swerve Brown.

Notes on Sweeteners:

I use my ownblend of xylitol, erythritol, and steviain my recipes. This is twice as sweet as sugar. It is comparable toTrim Healthy Mama Gentle SweetandTruvia.

To sub inSwerve or Lakanto Monk Fruit sweetener use 1.5 times the amount of sweetener called for.

To sub inPyureorTrim Healthy Mama Super Sweetuse half the amount of sweetener called for.

Substitutions will work in most recipes. They may not work in candies, such as caramel.
