What is the difference between brownies and blondies?

Unlike with brownies, when you are making a recipe for blondies, you can add just about anything into the blondies dough and the flavor really shines through! The lack of a chocolate base allows other flavors to take front and center.

Of course, I still absolutely LOVE brownies, and Angeline and I love to make them quite often, but blondies are a whole different ballgame!

Here are the necessary Ingredients for this Chocolate Chip M&M Blondies Bars Recipe

Instructions for How to make M&M Blondies Step by Step

You are going to begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9 x 13 baking dish.

This recipes makes between 12 and 24 bars, depending on what size you cut them into. I prefer a smaller blondie bar, so that they are a little less of a guilty treat, so my servings are usually 24.

When making this Easter M&M Chocolate Chip Blondie Bars Recipe for company or to take to a gathering, it is better to cut them into 12 servings.

In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the brown sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla until they are thoroughly combined.

Gradually add in the the flour, then your baking powder and salt, beating lightly until combined.

Next you are going to gently stir in the chocolate chips and the M&M's - do not beat them into the mixture, as you want them to be whole!

Pour your batter into your greased baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack and then put into the refrigerator for about half an hour.

Top tip for making our Chocolate Chip M&M Blondies

I always refrigerate my bars and brownies before serving because it makes it so much easier to cut into bars without them crumbling to bits.

Why are my blondies soggy? ›

Don't Overbake Blondies!

These blondies are meant to be a little gooey and soft. You can remove them from the oven just before they look like they're completely done because the residual heat of the oven and the pan will continue to cook them. Also, be sure your oven is actually at the temperature it says it is.

Is a blondie the same as a cookie bar? ›

Cookie Bar vs Blondie

Of course, the primary difference is in the ingredients rather than the appearance. What type of sugar you use is the specific difference. For these sugar cookie bars, I used white sugar. A classic blondie, would use brown sugar and butter for a butterscotch type flavor.

How do you know when a Blondie is done? ›

Brownies and Blondies

The toothpick test should produce a few errant crumbs stuck to the tester but not a smooth smear of batter. The edges will feel firm to the touch (not just set but actually kind of firm and crispy) and the surface will feel soft when pressed but will not spring back.

Why do my blondies taste like cake? ›

Tips. If your blondies are like cake when you take them out, it simply means they have been over baked – try less time or a lower temperature next time.

What did blondies used to be called? ›

At about mid-century, molasses brownies became known as blonde brownies. Soon after, the name shortened to blondies, giving the confection its own identity outside the brownie's shadow. The only question is whether they really do have more fun.

Why do blondies have so much sugar? ›

People tend to think of blondies as lighter version of brownies, just without the cocoa. It's not that simple. Most blondie recipes have way more flour and they rely heavily on brown sugar for chewiness. In other words, the process is similar to making cookie dough, which is to say that it's SO easy.

Can I use margarine instead of butter in blondies? ›

Yes! These chocolate chunk blondies work great with any kind of butter, so if you aren't dairy free you can absolutely use regular butter or margarine.

Why isn t my blondie cooking? ›

They might be undercooked, or cooked in too hot an oven. If the oven is too hot, the outside will cook nicely, but, the heat won't get a chance to cook the inside of your baking. Try making another batch, here are three ways to fix this: Use a larger pan, the batter will be thinner and cook more evenly.

Can you put blondies in the fridge to cool? ›

Pour the mixture into the lined tin and bake for 22-27 minutes (mine take 25 minutes), until there is an ever so slightly wobble in the mixture. Let the blondies cool in the tin fully, and then set the blondies in the fridge overnight if you can for best results.

What's the difference between a blondie and a Brookie? ›

Visually, it is easy to tell a brookie and a blondie apart. Blondies are paler in color, while brookies have layers of chocolate marbled in. While a brookie houses both a cookie and a brownie taste, blondies use brown sugar as their primary flavoring.

Why are they called Magic cookie Bars? ›

The reason these are called "magic" is because you layer everything into a pan, pour sweetened condensed milk over the top, and bake. When they come out of the oven, the sweetened condensed milk has baked into each layer, creating a bar that holds together and tastes amazing!

How should blondies look in the middle? ›

Pour into loaf tin and smooth over. Place onto a baking tray on the middle shelf of oven and bake for 25 minutes. Check your Blondie, the centre should have a slight wobble, if very wobbly put back into the oven for a few minutes until it has firmed a little. Leave in loaf tin until cool.

How do you tell if a Blondie is undercooked? ›

Check for doneness using a toothpick or wooden skewer. Poke near the middle when you check doneness, if very wet batter clings it needs a few more minutes. You can always bake it a bit longer if it's undercooked, but you can't turn back time and undo any overbaking.

Why do blondies look undercooked? ›

If your blondies are raw in the middle, it's important to consider the baking temperature and the type of pan you're using. We recommend using an 8×8-inch metal square pan (ours is from USA Pans), as it provides consistent heat distribution and baking results.

Is it okay for brownies to be gooey in the middle? ›
