Easy Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes Recipe

When it comes to cozy, comforting, quick and easy meals, you just can’t beat a sloppy joe. These messy sandwiches with a side of chips always hit the spot, anytime, all year round – and with just 20 minutes and barely any clean up, they’re always on stand-by at my house.

These Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are a super delicious twist on my popular classic sloppy joes recipe, made with onion, bell peppers, onions, and cheese to mimic the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak. They are crazy yummy and loved by everyone!

Ingredients Needed

To make this simple sloppy joe recipe, you’ll need just a few ingredients and seasonings, plus burger buns.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Olive oil – For cooking the beef and veggies.
  • Ground beef – I use lean ground beef to prevent excess grease.
  • Vegetables – Onions, green bell pepper, and mushrooms add flavor and texture for a more substantial filling and help mimic a Philly cheesesteak.
  • Seasonings – Salt, pepper, and taco seasoning (yep!) – see note below.
  • Sauce – Beef broth, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce create a rich, tangy sauce.
  • Cornstarch – Helps thicken the sauce.
  • Cheese – Shredded sharp white cheddar or Monterey jack cheese.
  • Hamburger buns– Or you can use slider buns for mini sandwiches.

  1. Cook the veggies and beef. Warm the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Add the onion, peppers, and mushrooms; sauté until tender. Add in the beef and continue to cook, breaking it up into tiny crumbles and browning, for another few minutes. Drain off fat.
  2. Add the sauce ingredients. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire, taco seasoning, salt, and pepper. Whisk together the cornstarch and broth and add it in. Simmer for a few minutes until mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Assemble the sloppy joes. Scoop some mixture onto buns, top with the cheese, and stick under the broiler for a minute until melted. (Alternatively, you can simply add the cheese in with the meat mixture and stir until combined and melted.) Serve warm and enjoy!

Recipe Tips & Variations

Here are a few tips for making the best Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes, along with some variations.

  • Taco seasoning, really? I know it sounds weird, and yes, we know it’s not an ingredient in Philly cheesesteaks. But it’s really just a seasoning blend that adds great flavor. It works, trust me! (Read all the positive reviews below.)
  • Use a different protein or broth. It will have a different flavor of course, but the ground beef can be replaced with ground turkey or ground chicken if desired. And chicken or vegetable broth can be used in place of the beef broth.
  • Like things spicy? If you want the mixture to have some heat, add in some chopped jalapeños or red pepper flakes.
  • Skip the bun. Instead of a bun, top abaked potatowith the sloppy Joe mixture. Yummy!
