Hearty Turkey Club Sandwich

I’m not usually a turkey fan, but I recently had the experience of trying a turkey club wrap at Trader Joe’s and it was a revelation! So to create my own version at home, I made this turkey club sandwich. It’s a twist on traditional b.l.t. sandwiches but with even more flavor.

Each bite is loaded with juicy turkey, slices of bacon, creamy avocado, and fresh lettuce. However, the tangy punch of the sun-dried tomatoes and sun-dried tomato aioli is what really takes this recipe to new heights.

Serve everything between slices of soft sourdough or ciabatta bread, or try making a wrap with your favorite type of tortilla! My favorite way to enjoy this turkey club sandwich is with some chips or a side salad for a well-balanced meal.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Mayonnaise: Adds creaminess and helps keep the sandwich moist. If you’re looking for a healthier option, try hummus or Greek yogurt.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes: Provide a tangy, concentrated tomato flavor in the mayo as well as on the sandwich itself. Use fresh tomatoes if they’re not available.
  • Garlic: Adds a pungent, zesty spice to the mayo. Garlic powder will work in a pinch.
  • Bread: Use your favorite type of bread! I prefer sourdough, but ciabatta bread, multigrain bread, whole wheat bread, or even wraps work.
  • Oven-roasted turkey breast: I use turkey deli slices for this sandwich, but you can also use chicken or even tofu for a vegetarian option.
  • Bacon: Adds a rich, smoky crunch. For a lighter version, use turkey bacon or skip it altogether.
  • Avocado: Offers a buttery, creamy texture and flavor in every bite. If you don’t have any avocados available, try cucumber for a crunch, or just leave it out.
  • Romaine lettuce: Gives the sandwich a refreshing crunch. You can also use iceberg lettuce for a more traditional flavor.

How to make a turkey club sandwich

  1. Make the sun-dried tomato aioli: First, you’ll need to craft a tangy, flavor-packed sandwich spread by combining sun-dried tomatoes, cloves of garlic, and mayo in a wide-mouth mason jar. Blend everything until the mixture is smooth and the tomatoes and garlic are finely incorporated.
  2. Toast the bread: Decide whether you’d like a slightly toasted crunch or a soft bite, and prepare your bread accordingly. If you’re taking this sandwich on the go, you might want to skip toasting it.
  3. Assemble the sandwich: Generously spread your freshly made sun-dried tomato aioli onto each side of the bread. Add a layer of turkey slices, crispy bacon, more sun-dried tomatoes, avocado slices, and lettuce leaves. Then, close your sandwich up!
  4. Make a wrap: If you’re making a wrap, follow the same process. Just ensure that you roll it up tightly and secure the wrap with toothpicks before slicing it in half.

Serving suggestions

This turkey club sandwich is a classic dish that pairs well with a number of sides. Here are just a few of my favorites:

  • Side salad: A fresh green or kale salad helps balance the richness of the sandwich. Or, you can double down on the heartiness with a side of potato salad.
  • Kettle chips: Add such a satisfying crunch to this meal! You can even stuff a few inside your sandwich for some serious texture.
  • Pickles: For a tangy addition that complements the sandwich flavors. Pickles are another condiment that you can add directly to your turkey club sandwich.
  • Drinks: A cold, crisp beer or refreshing iced tea is perfect to wash everything down.
  • Fruit: Finish your meal off with a refreshing piece of frozen yogurt bark or baked peaches and ice cream.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different type of meat for this turkey club sandwich?

Yes, you can substitute the turkey with chicken or ham if you prefer. You can even make this dish plant-based by using tofu or a vegan meat replacement.

Is it necessary to blend the sundried tomatoes into the mayo?

Yes, the blending process helps infuse the mayo with the rich, tangy flavors of sundried tomatoes. It also helps ensure the mayo is smooth and easily spreadable. However, you can finely chop the sundried tomatoes and stir them into the mayo instead.

Storage & reheating

If you have any leftovers or want to prepare the ingredients in advance, here’s what to do:

  • Fridge: Store the leftover turkey club sandwich in the fridge for up to 2 days. The sun-dried tomato aioli will last up to a week.
  • Prep ahead: You can prepare the aioli ahead of time and cook the bacon too. But since it’s so quick to put together, I suggest assembling the sandwich on the day of.

Variations

  • Cheese: Add a slice of cheddar or Swiss cheese to enhance the flavors even more.
  • Greens: Switch out romaine lettuce with spinach or arugula for a unique taste and texture.
  • Swap the mayo: Replace the mayo with Dijon mustard or pesto.
  • Chicken option: Opt for grilled chicken for a slightly charred flavor.

Top tips

  • Avoid overstuffing: Be careful not to overstuff your sandwich to make sure it’s easy to eat. Traditionally, club sandwiches are made with three layers of bread, but it’s honestly easier to eat with just two.
  • Serve it fresh: For the best taste and texture, serve your sandwich immediately after putting it together.
  • Quality turkey: Source your turkey from a reputable deli for high-quality, fresh-tasting meat.
  • Toasting option: If you prefer a warm and slightly crispy sandwich, don’t forget to toast your bread before assembling the sandwich.

This is an 11/10!! WOW! I was a little confused on the mayo part though. Ingredients didn’t specify chopped sun dried tomatoes and the directions stated to shake in a mason jar? I just chopped them and mixed. Either way, it was soo soo good.
