Here’s what else to consider
Be the first to add your personal experience
Billboards are one of the most common and effective forms of outdoor advertising, but they also have to compete with many distractions and limitations. How can you design a billboard that is clear, catchy, and memorable? One of the key factors is legibility, or how easy it is to read and understand the message. In this article, you will learn some of the best ways to evaluate the legibility of a billboard design, using both objective and subjective methods.

1 Contrast and color
One of the first aspects to consider is the contrast and color of the billboard. Contrast is the difference in brightness and hue between the text and the background, and it affects how well the text stands out from the surroundings. Color is also important, as it can evoke emotions, associations, and attention. To evaluate the contrast and color of a billboard design, you can use tools like Adobe Color or Color Contrast Checker, which can help you choose harmonious and accessible color combinations. You can also test your design in different lighting and weather conditions, to see how it looks in real scenarios.

I sent a long, long time trying to avoid colour in my designs. I liked the sleek, modern, grey and black and white look. Different shades that all work together. Except I didn’t like it. I was just good at it. I was scared to branch out and take that next step I knew I needed to take. Colour is the best form of contrast. Colours can tell a story all on their own. Or they can be used specifically to highlight a certain aspect of an image or design. Think black and white photograph of a woman on a rainy street in New York. Sleeting rain blurring the background, shaky reflections in shimmering puddles. A red umbrella. That’s emphasis. That’s storytelling. It’s simple, but it speaks.

Utilisez des outils comme Color Contrast Checker pour évaluer le contraste entre le texte et l'arrière-plan. Assurez-vous que le contraste est suffisamment élevé pour que le texte soit facilement lisible, en particulier dans des conditions de faible luminosité.

2 Font and size
Another crucial element is the font and size of the text. Font refers to the style and shape of the letters, and it can influence the readability and personality of the message. Size refers to how big or small the text is, and it can affect how far and how fast the viewers can see it. To evaluate the font and size of a billboard design, you can use guidelines like the Visibility Chart or the Legibility Index, which can help you estimate the optimal size and spacing of the text based on the viewing distance and speed. You can also test your design on a mockup or a simulator, to see how it looks from different angles and perspectives.

3 Content and layout
The final aspect to consider is the content and layout of the billboard. Content refers to what you want to say and how you say it, and it can influence the relevance and impact of the message. Layout refers to how you organize and arrange the elements on the billboard, and it can influence the hierarchy and clarity of the message. To evaluate the content and layout of a billboard design, you can use techniques like the 3-Second Rule or the 5-Point Test, which can help you check if your message is concise, compelling, and consistent. You can also test your design with real or potential viewers, to see how they react and respond to it.
