FBI claims Lynch admits Bronfman grab NEW YORK (AP) City fireman Mel Patrick Lynch confessed that he both kidnaped whisky heir Samuel Bronfman 2nd and picked up a $2.3 3 million ransom from the victim's multimillionaire father, an FBI affidavit alleges. Unsealed yesterday by U.S.
Atty. Paul Curran, the affidavit, one of four, also says Lynch admitted writing the ransom demand last June and then loaning the typewriter on which it was written to the daughter of his co-defendant, Dominic Byrne. Meanwhile, a source close to the Bronfman family said that the 21-year-old victim, who was held in Lynch's Brooklyn apartment for nine days, did not promise to help Byrne. Promises to Help Peter E. De Blasio, Byrne's lawyer, previously claimed the kidnaped heir shook hands with Byrne following his release Sunday and promised to aid him.
Young Bronfman, according to the source, recalled that there was "some minor courtesy for him' by Byrne and that he replied: "Thanks lots. I won't forget it." Byrne's lawyer has said that his client took "no physical part in the actual kidnaping." The affidavit says, however, that "on August 16 and 17, Byrne voluntarily spoke of his participation in the kidnaping." Sworn Affidavit The affadavit, sworn by FBI agent J. Kevin O'Brien, said that after Lynch's arrest last Sunday, he- "advised that he had perpetrated the kidnaping. The affidavit also gives first complete picture of the dramatic post-midnight payment of the $2.3 million ransom by the victim's father. It said Bronfman last Thursday drove to a designated phone booth at Kennedy Airport with the $2.3 million in bills of $100 denomination or less, carried in two green garY bage bags.
A call at the phone booth directed him to a series of other call boxes, and at the last call told him to be in an underpass in Queens, one of the city's five boroughs, at 2 last Saturday. When Bronfman drew up to the underpass, a man jumped into the car and ordered Bronfman to drive to a Queens address. There he put the money bags into a brown 1971 Oldsmobile which a check of the license plate showed was registered to Lynch, the FBI said. Against a background of gaily decorated booths and colored lights strung overhead, a program will be staged encompassing some of the features of the celebrated Ferragosto of Italy an annual celebration that takes place when the nation virtually shuts down business for its summer vacation. In addition to classical, folk and popular dances, the program will offer musical entertainment featuring Neal Zarrelli, international singing star who is famed for his varied repertory, ranging from contemporary pop to opera. Neapolitan and Tyrolean singers, accordionists, guitarists and bands also will entertain.
