Honestly, our favorite winter meal is probably Christmas dinner.

While we love Thanksgiving, it can be a little stressful hosting family from out of town (or traveling to visit family out of town), and the Thanksgiving menu, while delicious, tends to be pretty set.

A Christmas dinner, on the other hand, is a whole other thing. With less "must-have" dishes on the table, you can be free to cook only what you want. And while some folks do big holiday gatherings with lots of out-of-town family, a lot of us tend to have smaller, more intimate meals with just parents and kids, or a few siblings.

We still love to go all-out, though, when it comes to Christmas side dishes. After deciding on a main (whether that's a classic beef Wellington, a simpler braised short ribs, a holiday ham, or something else entirely), we start planning how to fill out the table.

Some side dishes are there year after year. Creamed spinach, green beans, and biscuits are always on the table. Others, we make as we fancy. Hopefully this list will inspire you to try a few new dishes of your own!

After that, then it's just a matter of picking a few Christmas desserts — picking just a few may be the hardest decision!
